BIOGRAPHY
Terri Geis is Visiting Associate Professor of Art and Art History at the University of New York, Abu Dhabi. She is a specialist on women artists affiliated with Surrealism and the intersections between Surrealism and the Americas. Past projects and publications include In Wonderland: The Surrealist Adventures of Women Artists in Mexico and the United States (Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 2012, with Ilene Susan Fort and Tere Arcq) and ‘ “My Goddesses and My Monsters”: Maria Martins and Surrealism in the 1940s,’ in Debates on Surrealism in Latin America: Vivisimo Muerto (Getty Research Institute, 2012). Geis’s work has also investigated Surrealism’s connections with Afro-Caribbean art and culture, with essays including ‘Myth, History and Repetition: André Breton and Vodou in Haiti’ (South Central Review, 2015); ‘ “The Old Horizon Withdraws”: Surrealist Connections in Martinique and Haiti: Suzanne Césaire/André Breton, Maya Deren/André Pierre’ (University of Manchester Press, 2016); and ‘Great Impulses and New Paths: VVV, Surrealism, and the Black Atlantic’ (Revue Miranda, Université Toulouse, 2017). Other publications include an essay for the retrospective exhibition and publication Leonora Carrington: Magical Tales (Museo de Arte Moderno, Mexico City, 2018), an essay for the catalogue of the retrospective exhibition on artist Nahui Olin (Museo Nacional de Arte, Mexico City, 2018), and multiple essays for The International Encyclopedia of Surrealism (London: Bloomsbury Academic, 2019). Geis is currently working on an exhibition, film, and publication project entitled David Hammons: Exquisite Corpse: Ted Joans.
